Small business marketing is important for brand exposure and for small businesses to be competitive.

In a competitive industry where major companies are spending millions of dollars to market their brand to potential consumers it is imperative that small business owners invest in small business marketing. Many new businesses don’t invest in small business marketing and eventually find themselves with a dwindling bank account and failure in their brand awareness.

It can be a struggle for small business owners to stay competitive but if they invest in small business marketing they will not only be competitive but it will strengthen their brand. Small businesses don’t have to damage their budget investing in a pricey marketing agency. Instead, they can market their brand in several different ways that is within their budget. With the explosion of social websites such as Facebook and Twitter, small businesses now have access to new marketing tools that have the potential to expose their business to millions of consumers.

Why small business marketing is important

No matter how great the product or service a small business offers, it means nothing if consumers aren’t aware of its existence. In order to promote consumer awareness, small businesses must have a marketing plan in place. Creating a marketing plan will not only create a format to operate from but it also allows new businesses a way to be competitive against already established businesses.

A small business marketing plan should include a competitor marketing analysis in order to explore marketing methods that will give them a marketing advantage over their competitor. Small businesses that don’t see the importance of marketing can risk business failure and a negative balance sheet.

Social media marketing

The number one deterrent for small business marketing is the lack of funding. but there are alternatives that small businesses can invest in that will be easy on their budget. Social media is an inexpensive way that businesses can use internet marketing to reach millions of consumers.

Facebook offers simple business ads that connect small businesses to potential consumers. Small businesses can advertise and pay only for the ads that consumers click on, this is called cost per click (CPC). Facebook ads allow small businesses to set the amount they wish to spend and they don’t have to worry about overspending in their budget. Facebook also offers free profiles that small businesses can use to interact with consumers and through this connection they can market their brand free of cost.

Utilizing social websites such as Facebook can help small businesses market their brand to potential consumers within a set budget. Small businesses can set a sensible budget for online marketing promotions of $100 a month that can easily bring in a return of twice the amount spent.

Website marketing

Another affordable internet marketing method is creating a business website so that consumers can easily access general information about the business, such as location and operation hours. Website marketing is the easiest way to gain exposure for a brand and it is simple for small business owners to create a website for free.

Businesses can get a free website from companies such as Weebly or WordPress. Creating a website not only gives small businesses a presence online but it is a free marketing tool that will not damage their budget. Although the website is free, small business owners will accrue a small charge in order to obtain the domain name for their business. This can be done for less than ten dollars through domain companies such as Godaddy.com.

Small business marketing is vital to the success of small businesses and should be added to any business plan. The first thing businesses should do is research affordable marketing methods, starting with free internet marketing tools such as social media outlets and free website programs. Small businesses should then create a marketing plan that includes a detailed marketing budget that works within the company’s overall budget.

Once the business has created their marketing budget they can begin to focus on creating an internet campaign to strengthen their brand exposure and establish their presence online. Although major companies spend millions of dollars on marketing consultants and methods, small business owners can reach the same consumers by utilizing these free and affordable methods.

I too find that Facebook seems to be the most responsive marketing tool. But I also found that just about all social media outlets are responsive if small businesses create a solid internet marketing campaign that explores the many advantages of social media. Check out my article Internet Marketing Campaign to see how you can utilize all social media sites to expand your brand awareness. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Dawn,
You're so right when you said... "No matter how great the product or service a small business offers, it means nothing if consumers aren’t aware of its existence."

Many business owners think, "if I build it. They will come." about their business, but that hardly ever is the case! :)

Many business owners also mistakenly copy the advertising and marketing outlets and tools that other businesses use - never testing to see if those outlets or tools are actually helping them - or the best way to reach their target customers. Copy what everyone else is doing is no way to stand out!

One way that small business owners should consider marketing online is by using content marketing. It's no cost and allows them to use the knowledge, passion and experience they have about their product/service to actually connect, help and build relationships with prospects.

Hi Scott,
I agree that many business owners have that mentality but I believe they all soon learn that website marketing is a must in order for them to gain exposure to their website. You also pointed out another free online service people could use to market their brand, content marketing.
Thanks for your comment Scott!
